Black Creek Trail... Miami, Florida Biking

9 Miles in the Greater Miami-Dade Bike Trail System, Connecting Parks and Neighborhoods

The Black Creek Trail (Route #7) runs along the Black Creek Canal from Black Point Marina and Park (where it links to the Biscayne Trail) to Larry and Penny Thompson Park - about 9 miles. Almost totally away from the road, it's an easy ride but with no shade and several busy road crossings, plus a couple of spots with gravel where the pavement is broken. A good neighborhood trail and link between trails, but not a recreational trail destination. (Map link and photos below.)

Biking on Black Creek Trail... Comments and Photos

Black Point Park and Marina

At the Park are ample parking, restrooms, a marina, boat launch, restaurant, picnic pavilions, biking and hiking trails, fishing jetty. The trail links with the Biscayne Trail at SW 87th St., then continues northwest alongside the canal.

Black Point Park to W. 176th St.

Leaving the Marina, the trail passes the Miami-Dade County Landfill - there may be an unpleasant odor depending on the wind - watch for the vultures. Past the landfill is the most pleasant section with many iguanas and wildlife along the canal. The trail crosses Old Cutler Road and then links to the Old Cutler Trail via a connector at SW 216th St. Past that point the area starts to get rough and at US 1 was a lot of trash and signs of vagrants. Cross US 1 at the Wal-Mart and continue along the canal, past residential areas.

W. 176th St. to Larry and Penny Thompson Park

At the trail's north end, a connector path runs east along W. 176th St. to Larry and Penny Thompson Park, near Zoo Miami. The 270-acre park has parking, restrooms, camping, picnic, hiking and biking trails, lake and beach.
